It started with a little duck, a family joke and absolutely no grand plan.What began with me hiding tiny ducks around my mum and stepdad's house soon turned into something much bigger.One day, a little duck found its way into a coffee shop. And that got me thinking: could something so small make a difference to somebody's day?So Coffee Shop Ducks was born.What I never expected was The Flock. A wonderful community of people hiding ducks, sharing smiles and spreading a little kindness, one coffee shop at a time.Because Coffee Shop Ducks has never really been about the ducks.It's about the people who find them. 💜Want to know how it all happened? Somewhere people who might be feeling lonely or isolated can come along, grab a coffee and feel part of something.Somewhere new mums and their baby ducklings can get out of the house, meet other parents and enjoy a little adult conversation without any pressure.And somewhere anyone who simply fancies a bit of company can feel welcome.I'd love to support independent coffee shops along the way, bringing people through their doors and helping these wonderful little businesses become gathering places for their communities.I don't know exactly what all of this will look like yet. It's a dream I'm hoping to build towards, one little step at a time.But wouldn't it be lovely if something that started with hiding tiny ducks eventually helped people find each other?Because the ducks might bring us together, but it's the people who make The Flock. 💜

Where one little idea became a Flock… and now a website.Coffee Shop Ducks started with my mum and stepdad, who collect rubber ducks.One day, while looking for a duck to buy them, I stumbled across a box of tiny ducks.Naturally, I bought them.And rather than simply giving them to my mum and stepdad, I decided it would be much more entertaining to start hiding them around their house.What followed was a series of phone calls, photographs and increasingly ridiculous hiding places.Some of which I'm still rather proud of.It became our little joke. Something silly, something that made us laugh, and something that required absolutely no explanation beyond the fact that we found it funny.At that point, I had no intention of starting a community, building a website or doing anything remotely sensible with tiny ducks.But then something happened that changed everything.Enter The Egg 🥚I'm a counsellor, and one day a mum asked if I would work with her young child, now affectionately known in duck history as The Egg.She suggested meeting in a coffee shop to make things feel a little less formal.When I arrived, The Egg was playing with a tiny duck.Just like the ones I'd been hiding around my mum's house.Of all the things that could have been sitting on that table, there was a little duck.And that little duck helped us connect.It gave us something to talk about. Something familiar. Something that didn't need to be complicated.Sometimes the smallest things can help people feel a little more comfortable.And that's exactly what happened.Then someone suggested hiding a duck in the coffee shop to see whether it would still be there when we returned for our next session.So we did.And guess what?It was.And just like that, we had our own little game.Something to look forward to. Something that made us smile.It wasn't about the value of the duck. It wasn't about winning anything.It was just a tiny bit of fun that meant something to us.The Coffee Shop Ducks ☕One day, while visiting the same coffee shop, I overheard the staff talking about their adopted store ducks.I couldn't help but laugh.I explained that I was using the little ducks as part of my counselling sessions and asked whether they wouldn't mind leaving them where they were.They told me they loved them.And I remember thinking how lovely that was.These tiny, ridiculous little ducks had somehow become part of the coffee shop.Something that had started as a joke at my mum's house had found its way into somebody else's day.And it got me thinking.If a little duck could make us smile, and the coffee shop staff enjoyed having them around, what might happen if other people found them?What if somebody was having a difficult day and spotted one?What if it made them smile?What if they told somebody else?I wasn't trying to change the world.I just liked the idea that something so small might make somebody's day a little brighter.So I started hiding ducks in coffee shops whenever I was out and about.And I loved it.I loved the thought of somebody finding one and wondering how on earth it had got there.Maybe they'd take it home.Maybe they'd leave it for somebody else.Maybe they'd smile for a moment and carry on with their day.I'd probably never know.And strangely, that was part of what made it special.And Then Came The Flock 🦆One day, I decided to start an Instagram page.Coffee Shop Ducks.I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, where it would go, or whether anybody beyond my mum would be remotely interested.But people started finding the page.They followed the little adventures, watched the Duck Drops and began sharing their own stories.Although I've never particularly liked the word followers.It makes everything sound like numbers on a screen.And these were people.Real people, with their own lives, their own stories and their own reasons for being there.So they became The Flock.And as The Flock grew, something wonderful happened.People started asking if they could hide ducks too.Of course they could!Suddenly, my little game became our game.Ducks started appearing in coffee shops across the UK.Then people began taking them on holiday.And somehow, those tiny ducks have now reached six continents.Six continents!All because I bought a box of little ducks and thought it would be funny to hide them around my mum's house.I still find that completely ridiculous.In the best possible way.More Than Just Ducks 💜But somewhere along the way, I realised something.The ducks were never really the most important part.They were simply an invitation.An invitation to smile.To connect.To share something.To be kind.And perhaps, most importantly, to feel part of something.We live in a world where so much of what we see online is designed to grab our attention, make us react or convince us that we're missing out.And I suppose I wanted Coffee Shop Ducks to be a little different.A small corner of the internet where people could just enjoy something innocent and silly.Where somebody else's happiness could be celebrated.Where people could join in without needing thousands of followers, expensive equipment or a perfectly edited video.You don't have to be anybody special to be part of The Flock.You just have to be you.The Flock makes me smile every single day.I love seeing where the ducks end up, hearing the stories behind the hides and watching people take this little idea and make it their own.Because it doesn't really belong to just me anymore.And I think that's one of the nicest things about it.So Why A Website?Well, Instagram is a funny old place.One day, something you post can reach thousands of people.The next day, you can share something you really care about and wonder whether anybody has actually seen it.And the more Coffee Shop Ducks grew, the more I realised I didn't want our little community to depend entirely on an algorithm deciding who got to see what.I wanted somewhere we could call our own.Somewhere we could share our stories, adventures and ideas.Somewhere people could find out how it all began, join in, get their own ducks and help spread a little happiness.A little home for The Flock.And that's what this website is.It's not some enormous business with a grand master plan.It's an extension of something that started with a family joke, a young person called The Egg, and a tiny duck in a coffee shop.I don't know exactly where Coffee Shop Ducks will go next.But I know what I want it to remain.Something kind.Something human.Something that makes people smile.Because this was never supposed to be about numbers.It was always about people.And if you've found your way here, whether you've been part of The Flock since the beginning or you've only just discovered us, thank you.I'm genuinely glad you're here.We hide tiny ducks. We make strangers smile. But what we're really building is somewhere people can belong.People over algorithms, always. 💜
